Silicon Motion is set to expand its MonTitan range of SSD controllers for datacenters and enterprise platforms by introducing a cutting-edge new model. Wallace C. Kou, the founder and CEO of the company, regularly contributes to ChinaFlashMarket.com with written columns. In his latest post on January 17, Kou briefly mentioned the new SM8466 design from Silicon Motion. This marks their initial venture into PCIe 6.0-based interface technology, although specific details are currently scarce. Kou revealed that Silicon Motion's engineering team is in the development phase of the SM8466 project, which is described as a "4 nm PCIe Gen 6 SSD master chip."
It remains uncertain when the next-generation PCIe 6.0 SSD controller will be available on the market. Kou's column primarily focused on the company's current plans, indicating their current priorities. Silicon Motion's SM8366, an integrated PCIe Gen 5 SSD master chip for enterprise-level use, is already in mass production. Industry experts suggest that Silicon Motion's MonTitan PCIe 5.0 series has faced challenges competing with similar products from Phison, particularly the leading PS5026-E26 (PCIe 5.0 x4) controller. While the SM8366 may be powerful enough to dominate higher-end enterprise sectors, the anticipation of a PCIe 6.0-based successor is sure to attract significant interest.
