MSI has officially revived its iconic Lightning GPU series, unveiling the highly anticipated MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z. This next-generation graphics card, recently highlighted at the CES 2026 Innovation Awards, marks the return of the Lightning brand after its last appearance with the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Lightning Z.

Advanced Cooling and Power Delivery

The RTX 5090 Lightning Z is engineered for enthusiasts and overclockers, featuring a sophisticated all-in-one liquid cooling system with a 360 mm radiator. Power delivery is robust, with dual 12V-2×6 connectors, each supporting up to 800 W, for a combined total of 1,600 W. This setup ensures the card can handle the most demanding workloads and extreme overclocking scenarios.

These records were set using advanced cooling solutions such as liquid nitrogen and custom water loops, rather than the standard retail AIO cooler.

Memory performance is equally impressive, with tests demonstrating stable operation at 36 Gbps. The card utilizes Samsung GDDR7 modules, which are now available at these speeds out of the box. However, achieving such high memory frequencies on older modules still requires extreme cooling methods like LN2.

MSI has reportedly developed an XOC VBIOS for the RTX 5090 Lightning Z, enabling the card to draw up to 2,500 W of power. This level of power consumption is intended for extreme overclocking and will require additional modifications to the power input on the PCB.
